The days of three square meals are fading as menu offerings expand to fill the entire day. Many consumers who abruptly started working from home in 2020 saw dramatic changes in the way they ate. While some were finally able to enjoy a normal breakfast, others turned to one “big meal” (à la intermittent fasting), and still more became grazers, enjoying ready access to the kitchen—and takeout menus—throughout the day.
Habits have formed around early morning coffee, midday snacks, and late-night comfort foods. Some new trends point toward immunity-boosting snacks, plant-based sandwiches, and streamlined menus, according to the National Restaurant Association.
Restaurant operators who have fought back against labor shortages and supply chain issues over the past year to offer menu items that fit a variety of dayparts and answer these new consumer cravings will continue to reap the rewards of a growing all-day eating trend.
Meanwhile, consumers with new responsibilities, such as at-home office work, homeschooling, and for some, new entrepreneurial pursuits, will continue to create a demand for dining rooms, food delivery, and takeout to be available 24/7.
